About Aurora Arts Theatre

Aurora Arts Theatre (AAT) is proud to celebrate 15 years of live theatre. Since opening its doors in January 2010, Aurora Arts Theatre has been a cornerstone for celebrating live theatre in the Coastal Bend. Founded by Ed Chapa, AAT has thrived under the leadership of his wife, Mary Chapa, following his passing in 2011. Ed’s passion for the arts and his vision for establishing a community theatre on the southside of Corpus Christi inspired all who knew him. His dream lives on in every performance and every connection made within the theatre.

The theatre’s name honors Ed's mom, Aurora "Loli" Chapa Taylor, a South Texas native with a profound love for the arts. Born in Harlingen, Texas, Aurora moved to Corpus Christi after her marriage, where she and her husband raised four sons, including Ed. A gifted dress designer, seamstress, and avid crafter, Aurora’s creativity and dedication are the foundation of the theatre’s inspiration.

AAT’s inaugural production, Nunsense, marked the beginning of a legacy that continues to flourish. Since then, the theatre has welcomed more than 200,000 patrons, produced over 87 shows, and worked with thousands of passionate volunteer actors. One hallmark of AAT’s productions is the inclusion of a live band for every musical—a cherished tradition since its founding.

In recognition of its contributions to the local arts community, the Corpus Christi City Council proclaimed January 22, 2020, as “Aurora Arts Theatre Day,” celebrating a decade of enriching the community.

As AAT commemorates its 15th anniversary in 2025, the mission remains steadfast: to provide high-quality theatre experiences in a warm, inclusive environment. Whether on stage, behind the scenes, or in the audience, AAT continues to inspire new generations of theatre lovers.

At Aurora, we’re not just creating performances—we’re making memories that last a lifetime. That's “live theatre, baby.” - Ed Chapa
